In 2002, the European Union and Chile entered into an Association Agreement, stipulating that, at the end of an interim 12-year period, it would authorise use of the “Champagne” designation only to sparkling wines awarded the Champagne Protected Designation of Origin).
This interim period came to an end on 1st February 2015.
Champagne growers are delighted by the now official and permanent recognition of the Champagne appellation in Chile.
Market checks will be performed by the Comité Champagne (the industry's umbrella organisation) in the coming months to ensure compliance with this agreement.
