September 14th, 2015 - The Champagne Bureau UK is delighted to announce Simon Stockton as the winner of the 2015 Champagne Ambassadors’ Awards UK Final. The award, launched in 2005 by the Comité Champagne, is to recognise and reward the work of wine educators across Europe.
The UK final was held today at the Champagne Bureau UK offices in London. Candidates faced a panel of high profile judges including Gérard Basset MW (Master of Wine and Master Sommelier); Richard Bampfield MW (Freelance Wine Expert and Educator and 2009 Champagne Ambassador); Carol Whitehead (Freelance Wine Educator and 2006 Champagne Ambassador); and Françoise Peretti (Director of the Champagne Bureau UK).
This year’s theme was ‘Reserve Wines’. Candidates were given four Champagnes to taste and delivered a talk on the theme. They were judged on their knowledge, communication skills and ability to bring the subject alive.
Following the announcement of the winner there was a celebratory lunch at The Greenhouse Restaurant in Mayfair. Different Champagnes were paired with Arnaud Demas ’highly creative food: Champagne Beaumont des Crayères cuvée Stanislas NV with Orkney scallop and samphire, wild sea bass was paired with Champagne J. Lassalle cuvée Angeline 2008, and Champagne Moët et Chandon rosé Grand Vintage 2003 with fig andoa chocolate and honey.
Simon Stockton will go on to represent the UK and compete against the national finalists from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands and Switzerland. The runners up were Heather Dougherty and Godfrey Spence.
The European final will be held on Wednesday 28 October in Champagne and the winner will be announced at a gala dinner on Thursday 29 October. Competitors will contend for the overall title of ‘Winner of the European Champagne Ambassadors’ Competition 2015’ and two other awards will be given: Runner-Up and Special Prize at the European Champagne Ambassadors’ Awards 2015.
