Give the grape clusters room to breathe!
Come summer, there is still plenty to be done in the vineyard. One key task is "trellising". The aim is to separate the shoots and staple them to two support wires. For that, the grower threads two wires through staples fastened to vine stakes and evenly distributes the shoots between these two wires.
This is essential to ensure healthy Champagne vines! It prevents an overly dense leaf canopy. This allows maximum penetration of sunlight and encourages air circulation, preventing rot and other diseases. The task is done entirely by hand, as are many of the stages in Champagne. It is a painstaking job where patience is absolutely essential!
