In Champagne, dates for the beginning of the harvest, which are fixed each year by grape and by village, have been set between September 2nd and September 18th, although some villages in the Aube and Sezannais have already started picking due to early maturation.
The year 2015 in Champagne was exceptionally hot and dry throughout the end of May to mid-August, which slowed down the development of the grapes. Fortunately, rain hit the region during the second half of August, allowing growth of the berries, and with added sunshine and heat, a quick maturation in the best of conditions was ensured.
Therefore, the condition of the grapes is excellent. The maximum yield set at 10,000 kg/ha by the winemakers and houses last July (to which will be added 500 kg/ha from reserve stocks), should be achieved by all in the appellation.
The harvest being exclusively manual in Champagne, the region is expecting over 100,000 seasonal workers to pick, transport and press the grapes.
