News - Protection of the Champagne appellation
In April 2013, the European Commission hosted a ‘Tastes of Europe’ show to mark the start of negotiations for an EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement. The event brought together top-quality producers from countries throughout Europe, and included a conference on Geographic Indications. A spokesman for the Comité Champagne took this opportunity to familiarize Vietnamese officials and producers with the concept of the Champagne AOC and the issues surrounding its protection – Vietnam being one of the few remaining countries where it does not enjoy recognition.
The protection of Geographical Indications is a key priority for the European Commission, which expects the future EU-Vietnam Agreement to guarantee the protection of the Champagne AOC, at a time when its identity is widely misused.
