I Bureau du Champagne

Welcome to the Bureau du Champagne, USA

The Champagne Bureau located in Washington, DC, is the U.S. representative of the Comité Champagne, the trade association that represents all the grape growers and houses of Champagne, France. The Bureau works to educate US consumers about the uniqueness of the wines of Champagne and expand their understanding of the importance location plays in the creation of all wines. We are intently focused on ensuring Champagne is properly protected in the United States, as it is in most of the rest of the world.

Declaration to Protect Wine Place & Origin

The Joint Declaration to Protect Wine Place & Origin marks an unprecedented effort among some of the world's leading wine regions to raise public awareness about the importance of location to winemaking and the need to protect wine place names around the world.

First signed in Napa Valley on July 26, 2005, the Declaration now includes 19 signatores from the world's most renowned wine regions. Members include:

  • Champagne
  • Chianti Classico
  • Jerez/Sherry
  • Napa Valley
  • Oregon
  • Paso Robles
  • Port
  • Sonoma County
  • Walla Walla
  • Washington
  • Tokaj
  • Victoria
  • Western Australia
  • Rioja
  • Long Island
  • Bourgogne/Chablis
  • Willamette Valley
  • Bordeaux
  • Santa Barbara

These regions have joined together to educate and raise awareness among the industry, including policymakers, the media and consumers.
Our collective efforts include demanding that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) permanently shelve its efforts to launch “.wine” and “.vin” extensions as the delegation of such strings could lead to increased consumer confusion about wine growing place names and undermine the long standing efforts that our regions and producers have put into educating wine consumers about each region’s characteristics. Many Declaration signatories have sent letters to U.S. policymakers, regulators and ICANN officials demanding that the process be shelved (see letters to ICANN, NTIA and Members of Congress). U.S. policymakers have also sent letters (see letters).
