Henri IV Festivities

Need information?

Wysiwyg

For over two decades, every two years on the first weekend of July, the citizens of Aÿ graciously entrust the keys of their historic town to their good King Henri IV. As the proud owner of a noble wine press and a fervent admirer of the exquisite wines of Aÿ, the townspeople honor his majestic legacy with a truly magnificent tribute.

When a Spanish ambassador presented his credentials to the king, proudly listing his endless noble titles, an amused King Henri IV simply replied, "And I am the Sire of Aÿ and Gonesse"—meaning, the sovereign lord of fine wine and good bread. His royal physician had wisely prescribed the wines of Champagne, finding them wonderfully lighter and more delicate than those of Burgundy. Deeply savoring this delightful remedy, Henri IV became intimately acquainted with the golden fruit of our sunlit hillsides.

A serendipitous alignment of circumstances at the twilight of the 17th century revealed the effervescent magic hidden within the wine. Through the unsurpassed quality of its terroir and the brilliant craftsmanship of its people, Aÿ established the timeless renown of this sparkling novelty. Long before it claimed global fame, the world celebrated this golden elixir not as "Champagne," but proudly as "Vin d'Aÿ." During the Henri IV festivities, a captivating atmosphere embraces the entire town. We invite you to discover delightful surprises, taste exquisite local specialties, and experience a vibrant weekend of pure joy and relaxation, deeply rooted in the grand tradition of Champagne. Enchanting music, spectacular shows, a grand parade, elegant artisanal crafts, and masterful gastronomy await you!
