The official launch date for Champagne’s Joie de Vivre prize for Great Britain was scheduled for March 13, 2013. The event was held in London.
Under the auspices of the Champagne Committee, The Champagne Joie de Vivre prize was created in 1999, in Germany, and has also been awarded in Japan and Switzerland.
The first British award winner is Richard Young, the celebrated photographer whose career making portraits of the world’s celebrities began quite by accident, with a photo of Elizabeth Taylor at the Dorchester Hotel that was soon famous the world over.
20 years later, his photos of celebrities like Elton John, the Beatles, Mick Jagger, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Robert Deniro, David Bowie as well as the Dalai Lama, Fidel Castro, the British troops in Iraq, Princess Diana and Prince Charles, continue to be published in magazines around the world.
A great observer of our modern era, devoid of voyeurism, Richard, the anti-paparazzo, has himself become a star. As he’s said about himself, “ My life is a long series of nights of wonder and “joie de vivre”, where Champagne flows freely”. Richard is the ideal award winner. His photos glow with joie de vivre and his love for Champagne”, says Françoise Peretti, Director of Great Britain’s Champagne Bureau.
Richard and his wife, Susan, will soon visit the Champagne region, as guests of the Comité Champagne.
